Hi Arul. Thank you for speaking to Saltycustoms. To start, tell us a little bit about yourself.
My name is Arul Joseph Easiah. I’m the Capability Development Manager of Coca-Cola Malaysia, and I’m in charge of the company’s demand fulfilment and commercial capabilities. Before joining Coca-Cola, I worked in Bosnia and Herzegovina for 3 years, doing Sales and Marketing.
Arul, what keeps you motivated in your career?
At this moment, I’m very happy to be part of Coca-Cola Malaysia because this company has a very clear vision of where we want to be and how we want to get there. On top of that, I can envision how my career is going to grow for the next 3 to 5 years.
That’s great. Now, what do you think keeps employees motivated at the workplace?
For employees, professional development is essential, and that includes having the right support system and being able to receive regular feedback from the employers. Of course, good remuneration translates to better quality of life, and that is important to most, if not all employees. Lastly, employees value transparency within the organisation they work for.

What do you normally read and how do you consume information about employee training?
I have a broad interest in reading! Outside of business, I love reading about politics and history to help myself understand how people respond to certain situations. I also read a lot of books that teach me invaluable leadership lessons.
For work, I do most of my reading on the web. I’m an avid reader of LinkedIn articles as well as articles from other business sites. I think it’s important for a person to be able to use the knowledge gained from reading to help him/her think out of the box at work.
What do you think are some characteristics that successful business people possess?
I do not have to look far when it comes to successful business people. Every day, I work with successful superiors who are very dynamic in the way they do things, and that is a quality that I really admire. Also, I think successful people are very adaptable to changes, be it changes in business, people or even the economy.
Great business people are also always very customer-centric and process oriented. It means that they always know what their customers want, and they have a strategic process to help them fulfil the needs of their consumers effectively.

Do you think custom t-shirts are able to form stronger bonds among employees? Why?
Yes, absolutely. Even at Coca-Cola, we have used custom t-shirts for many internal events and divisions, one of them being the Market Impact Team (MIT), to bring our people closer together. I believe that when employees receive a custom t-shirt, they feel not just happiness, but also a sense of pride and belonging.
Speaking of custom t-shirts, I really enjoyed working with Saltycustoms because you guys did something that was really creative for our MIT t-shirts. I’m glad to say that our employees were all very excited to put on the MIT t-shirts because the design was really attractive. You guys did a wonderful job; keep it up!
In your opinion, what differentiates Saltycustoms from other custom t-shirt makers?
Well, first and foremost, you guys put a really creative spin to your designs. Coca-Cola Malaysia always strives to innovate and not stagnate, and I believe that the bold design Saltycustoms developed for us was the perfect embodiment of our mission to always seek great new ideas.
Lastly, what advices would you give to aspiring HR/training managers?
Always be willing to change, if it means to change for the better. Don’t forget to put your customers first, and always take the opportunity to enhance your leadership skills. Oh, and don’t forget to be transparent with all your employees!
