Hello, Santhra! Tell us more about yourself.
Hi! My name is Santhra Segaran, and I’m the Senior Manager, HR and Admin of IJM. I’ve been with IJM for over 4 years now. I’m 38 years old, and I have a beautiful wife and an adorable child.
I love travelling and spending time with the people I care about. When I have time on my hands, I watch a lot of science fiction movies.
Awesome! Do share with us, what keeps you motivated at work?
I’d have to say the company itself. IJM has been treating me really well, and I feel appreciated every day. Also, the challenges that I face on a day-to-day basis really push me to become better, so that’s a huge motivation as well.
In your opinion, what keeps employees motivated in their workplace?
I think the reward that comes after a job well done is one of the biggest motivators in the workplace. If each and every staff has the understanding that they will all be rewarded equally if they can deliver value to the company, I believe they will be more driven to succeed.

Santhra, what do you normally read and how do you consume information about human resource?
I visit online news sites frequently to broaden my knowledge, and I am always on the web looking for something that benefits my work and improves me as a person. Oh! Also, IJM has a Learning Department, where classes are conducted 3 times a week to upskill the staff. It’s wonderful!
That’s really great. Based on your experience, what do you think are some of the characteristics of successful people in a company?
Patience is key, for me. My superior has been working for IJM for 30 years now. He loves what he does, and that’s why he always gives 100% to the company, and in turn, that has made him very successful. Also, leadership is equally as important, as are hardwork, great communication skills and a little bit of luck!

What do you think are the most important future trends in learning and developing employees for an organisation?
It’s not easy predicting future trends these days, seeing how technology is advancing so quickly. Instead of seeing how far we’ll go, let me just give an example of how far we’ve come. Back in the days, we had to train employees by having face-to-face sessions with them. That was really time consuming and resource draining. These days, most of our development programmes are done via the Internet. Amazing, huh? I truly believe that technology can tremendously improve any sector if we know how to harness it.
How did your most recent experience with Saltycustoms help you at your work?
Saltycustoms played a big part in helping us reinforce our corporate branding and identity. Those guys really made some beautiful t-shirts for us. We went with two different colours for the t-shirts, and we allowed our employees to choose which colour they wanted. I think we need to explore more colours for the next order!

What do you think differentiates Saltycustoms from everyone else you’ve used before?
Simple, it’s the customer service. We ran into some issues with our order, and to our surprise, the Co-Founder of Saltycustoms, King, personally came by to our office to solve the problem for us. We really did not expect such a gesture. On top of that, he even gave us a discount on our order. He promised us that the future orders would be perfect, and until today, he still personally checks on each of our orders himself. To me, that is the biggest differentiating factor for Saltycustoms.
To end, what advice would you give to young Admin or HR Managers?
It’s important to remember that our staff is our clients, so we need to have plenty of patience in us. Always communicate well, and keep your ears open to what the employees have to say.
